CRA Winter Regatta

February 23, 2002

Well, it was our first race of the year and it almost didn't happen.  CIA had been reserved by a club member at Harbor Sailboats and so by the week of the race, we had abandoned all hope of getting it together.  We got word on the Wednesday before that we could race.  Now it was up to Russ to pull enough crew together.  We just barely made it!

Thanks to Kate Koczot's last minute decision to come out we were able to sail in the Winter Regatta with a crew of 6. We did surprisingly well considering, coming in 4th of the 8 in Class A in the first race and 5th overall in the two races.

Peter flew in just in time to climb on board and took the helm for the first race and Russ went onto the foredeck with Jim Forbes giving some good direction.  We actually got off to a decent start in the first race and held our own most of the way.

Russ steered in race 2. Scott alternated between mast and pit and his father in law Don, who has skippered many a race boat in his time in San Francisco, was a great help in the cockpit on main and jib, as well as being able to offer some sagely tips. Kate again trimmed well and also helped in pit. Forbes did tactics, spin trim, and jumped onto the foredeck for race 2.

Nothing like wearing multiple hats! It was a great learning experience for all and there were no crashes or shredded sails!!
