HOT RUM RACE WEEKEND 1 - NOVEMBER 9-10, 2002
It was the first
race on CIA for many, and considering it was the first time we all
worked together, everyone did really well. Despite the rainy
weather and lack of wind on Saturday, we managed to make a lot of progress
with the help of Kevin and Paul.
The biggest
mistake of the day was made by your skipper, who misjudged where we needed to
be before the start and got us there 4 minutes after our start time. We
certainly didn't need to give our competition that handicap. It won't
happen next time, I assure you.
Once we did cross
the line, we made some pretty good time on a starbord tack out of the bay.
Everything was going pretty well until we picked up some kelp. Uh, let
me rephrase that. Until we picked up a giant Medusa and her three
sisters. Even after backing down, we weren't able to drop it and
the lack of kelp stick didn't help us either. Fortunately, we were able
to lift Medusa out of the water and throw her off the back.
We fared reasonably well to the windward mark and had a decent set. It took a little while to get settled with all the rolling swells (the 9 footers from Saturday were still around), but we did all right.
As we approached the second (leward) mark, however, we got pretty fouled up as Falcon came up on windward/starbord tack and forced us out of her way before we could jibe. To make matters worse, along comes Manta-J, with the half blind woman at the helm. She apparently had a vendetta against Lisa Marie because not once but twice they pushed us into irons with our pole on the wrong side. When they finally left, we drifted past the mark as we struggled to loosen the spin halyard. (This is not the first time the spin halyard's gotten stuck on a take down, so we will need to do something about that.) Fortunately, our drifting made it easier to make mark 3 (the clearing mark).
When we finally
were able to finish the take down, we managed to only score a small hole in
the sail, and got it put away. Things got better after that as we did
pretty well heading back up wind and to the final mark.
Matt performed
brilliantly on the bow and Scott has certainly begun to master the mast.
Michele and Margot did an excellent job on trim, as did Jurgen. Our
"ringer", Lisa Marie, did an excellent job helping with wind and
tactics while also taking on spin trim and William did well on main.
Francis came a long way learning pit with the help of Michele. Sue the
"rookie" was a big help in many areas and Beatrice was an excellent
photographer.
We developed as a
team working together for the first time. We didn't crash. And we
didn't come in last!
