SUMMER 2001 BEER CAN SERIES

Team CIA was able to participate in seven of the ten Beer Can races on Wednesday evenings in San Diego Bay.  These were races 1,2,3,4,6,8, and 10.

Our first race was on May 30th. While we started well, we had trouble at the first mark and could never catch up to some of the faster boats.  We ended up 7th in our first Beer Can.  See  Race 1 Results  for details.

The second race was June 7th.We had a much better race and were third across the line behind Silhouette and French Bred.  Unfortunately, Ratso and Persuit (Tom Hirsh's boat) corrected out and we placed 5th. See  Race 2 Results  for details.

We sailed to a tie for 8th place finish in race 3.  Here are the   Race 3 Results

In race 4 we had a rough time and were 16th out of 18  Race 4 Results

We missed race 5 but came back in Race 6 with a big win!

We had a great start and chased our twin, Warren Gross's Silhouette most of the race.

With the expert help of John Bennet, we were able to make all the right decisions that day.

And thanks to a miscue by Silhouette, who sailed the wrong course, we were able to run away with the race, way ahead of the rest of the fleet.

We were quite giddy after crossing the finish line.  Some of us were unable to contain their excitement!

Later at Fiddlers, while Warren (who went on to win the whole series) explained how he missed the mark...

...we savored our victory at Fiddler's.  See  Race 6 Results!

Race 8 was exciting and the start was very tight with the other boats.

We managed to get off cleanly, though, and had a good race, at least for the first leg.

We also got into a protest situation around the mark, which we fortunately won.  We were 3rd across the finish again but corrected out to place 6th. See  Race 8 Results

Race 10 went pretty well and we managed to finish up with a 7th place finish See .Race 10 Results

We had  a lot of fun and the crew really came a long way this summer.  We ended up 8th of 19 over all in the series.  You can check the final standings for details.  The highlight of the Beer Can Race Series was clearly our win in race 6.  Hopefully, there will be many more like it soon.
